Energy is Energy

Having been a telecommunications engineer specialising in radio frequency, I spent years optimising radio networks. This work gave me a first-hand understanding of how frequency shapes communication in systems we take for granted.

Most of us use our mobile phones daily. Dial a number, and within seconds, a phone rings on the other side of the world. We never question this process. Yet, we often resist applying the same logic to our personal, internal experiences. When we speak about energy in the body and our human exchange, many encounter deep resistance.

When we talk about radio signals, we are talking about electromagnetic energy. The Oxford English Dictionary defines energy as “the potential or capacity of a system to do work by virtue of its motion, position, chemical structure, etc.”. A radio wave qualifies: it moves through space, carries information, and elicits a response upon reception. It is, at its core, a propagating oscillation of the electromagnetic field, with the energy carried by that oscillation.

Space is already saturated with electromagnetic energy. My professor during postgraduate engineering studies put it succinctly: “if radio waves were not transparent, we would not be able to see each other”. But raw energy alone is inert. To produce an effect, it must be directed. Energy becomes powerful when it is directed and structured. A radio signal is energy organised into meaningful information.

We cannot see this energy, but we all acknowledge its reality. Let’s start from this agreed-upon truth: energy is real. And it shapes communication within your own system, too.

The Impact of Interference

Think about dialling a number. You are packaging data; a digital signalling request, a.k.a. call setup request, stating who you are and who you want to reach.

Upon pressing “call”, your phone modulates this digital information, converting your request into a radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic wave. Your phone’s antenna transmits it to the nearest cell tower.

The network then identifies the destination, checks its availability, locates it, and reserves the pathway. It sends a paging signal, a “ring” command to the target phone, which converts this command into a ringing tone. Only then can the conversation take place.

Let’s pause here. Even when a signal is present, communication can still fail. If the receiving phone is switched off, unreachable, or if the channel is heavily degraded by interference, the call cannot be completed. The signal exists, but it cannot be clearly received or interpreted.

In telecommunications the path that a radio wave traverses directly impacts the quality and outcome of the entire exchange. A clear channel is essential to establishing communication with flow. Interference distorts the signal, and until the noise is cleared and the pathway stabilised, meaningful communication cannot occur.

The Somatic Analogy

This is the somatic parallel. Internal interference, in the form of stagnant energy, can disrupt the goals you are trying to achieve and create an imbalanced state. Just as interference distorts a signal in a telecommunications network, internal interference distorts how your system responds to life.

You see this play out in very real, very practical ways.

Some people experience it primarily through their bodies. I see professionals, directors, and executives – people who are mentally sharp and highly capable – who struggle to sit for long periods because of persistent hip or lower back pain. They undergo surgery believing they are fixing the problem, only for the pain to return months later, or to reappear somewhere else in the body. The symptom changes form, but the pattern remains.

Others are constantly unwell. Always developing illness, regularly exhausted. Frequently unable to show up fully for work despite doing “all the right things”. Rest, supplements, and medical care help temporarily, but the system never quite stabilises.

For others, the interference shows up first in repeating life patterns rather than physical symptoms.

They enter business partnerships that start well, only for the partner to disengage or walk away. Or they attract clients who repeatedly fail to pay, even when contracts are clear and boundaries are enforced. They expend enormous energy trying to control the situation, following up, chasing, and tightening systems, only to find the same scenario replaying itself with the next client.

Others perform well in their roles, meet expectations, even exceed them, and yet they are repeatedly terminated or blocked from progression. A restructuring appears. A conflict arises. A roadblock emerges at the same point in the journey, again and again. On the surface, each situation looks different. Underneath, the pattern is strikingly consistent.

These experiences are not a lack of effort or capability. They are signals of interference within the system. They act like noise in a channel, and keep you stuck with undesired symptoms or recurring life challenges that seem to resist resolution. Even when you are taking the correct actions externally, something invisible slows the process or derails it entirely.

This is what some frameworks refer to as counter-intentions: internal signals that run contrary to your conscious goals. Not because you are sabotaging yourself deliberately, but because parts of the system are still operating under old, unresolved conditions. Their presence lowers the system’s overall coherence and creates the invisible blocks underlying physical, mental and emotional states, and external circumstances.

Conclusion

Just as a clear channel is the non-negotiable prerequisite for a successful call in a telecommunications network, clearing internal interference is the same essential prerequisite for an internal state of balance. Until interference is addressed at the vibrational level in the body, the signal remains distorted, and the same outcomes tend to repeat, no matter how much willpower or strategy is applied.

Removing these invisible blocks is what restores coherence between your actions and your goals. It clears the pathway so that effort once again produces proportional results.

This is where vibrational, somatic work finds its purpose. Its focus is not on forcing change, but on teaching you how to clear the interference and open the internal channel. When the channel is clear, intention no longer meets resistance, and what was previously stalled can finally move.
